About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Lead and coordinate all technical aspects of substations and balance of plant for large and complex substation projects
- Provide technical direction, expectations, and reviews to engineering teams
- Identify internal and external stakeholders and align technical information, execution strategy, and communications
- Manage engineering schedules, design safety, design reviews, design optimization, on-time delivery, risk management, and quality control/quality assurance
- Execute full HV physical outdoor substation design and arrange HV, LV, and MV equipment
- Direct engineers and designers while coordinating with sourcing and project teams
- Develop and review single-line drawings, plan and elevation drawings, substation arrangements, construction details, equipment layouts, cabling, wiring, auxiliary power, grounding, and control-building layouts
- Oversee studies, calculations, and bills of material
- Manage combined project BOM and MDL from multiple sources
- Write and review high-voltage equipment technical specifications
- Support sourcing through vendor quotations and reviews
- Act as the single point of contact for customer and project-manager technical issues
- Manage technical change control and project risk
- Oversee engineering subcontractor scope, hours, change management, quality, schedules, and customer interface
- Meet customer engineering CTQs
- Support substation project proposals and tenders, including estimating man-hours and applying major equipment
Requirements
What you’ll need- Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an accredited university or college
- Professional Engineering license in Canada
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in Transmission & Distribution substation engineering for electric utilities and renewable energy power plants
- Experience as an Electrical Project Engineer in substation applications, including primary outdoor physical substation design and required studies
- Ability and willingness to travel up to 20%
- Strong knowledge of HV equipment for GIS/AIS substations
- In-depth experience applying North American HV substation standards and guidelines, including IEEE, ANSI, NEC, and NESC
- Knowledge of local Grid Codes and related equipment safety, application, sizing, and integration
- Ability to engineer design packages without clear customer specifications
- Strong knowledge of contract and project management, EPC, or EEP project execution
- Understanding of civil engineering and substation-related structural design requirements
- Working knowledge of design calculations for primary and secondary equipment
- Legal authorization to work in Canada
- Successful completion of a background investigation
