About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Report to the Head of Valve Converter Engineering within the HVDC Valve Converter Engineering function
- Work on tender and project activities related to HVDC applications
- Schedule the team's work and define priorities
- Perform people reviews
- Manage people development through knowledge sharing, mentoring, and training
- Forecast upcoming team work
- Communicate technical issues throughout the organization using contemporary communication tools
- Ensure engineering processes and best practices are followed and auditable documentation is created
- Ensure engineering products meet required quality levels for clients and the marketplace
- Collate and report team KPIs
- Review and approve key technical documentation
- Lead the team in solving challenging technical issues
- Manage and deliver tender and project deliverables for the Valve Converter Mechanical Team according to plan and budget
- Complete technical requirements specifications to solve project issues
- Interact proactively with other engineering departments for product definition
- Make independent decisions where required
- Ensure work considers applicable international standards and policies
- Foster knowledge sharing and mentoring within the team
- Collaborate with GE units, test laboratories, customers, and project sites through international travel
Requirements
What you’ll need- Educated to degree level in sciences or equivalent degree
- Mechanical Engineering background
- Proven experience of the design and/or development of power electronic converters, preferably at high power >1MVA
- Understanding of HVDC Valve Converter covering both LCC and VSC technology preferred
- Experience managing an engineering team
- Experience managing technical issues with client and contract preferred
- Prior experience in the electrical transmission industry
- Prior experience in a manufacturing environment
- Proactive approach to Health & Safety, including conducting Risk Assessments
- Industrialisation and supply chain integration
- Specification and report checking and approving
- Requirements capture
- EHS compliance ability
- Strong communication skills
- Excellent organisation skills
- Knowledge of HVDC converter design, testing and installation desired
- Mechanical design exposure desired
- Thermal and hydraulic design, including loss temperature calculations, thermal modelling, thermal characteristics of material, and pressure drop calculations desired
- Intellectual property and patent process experience desired
- Ability to coordinate and lead a large group of multi-discipline engineers desired
- Good at sharing knowledge and experience desired
