About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Provide direct patient care to assigned patients under general supervision
  • Compile patient databases and formulate nursing diagnoses using physical assessment and interviewing techniques
  • Anticipate the need for intervention by other disciplines and determine patient-care priorities

  • Initiate and update written nursing plans of care using scientific and psychosocial principles
  • Coordinate patients, families, significant others, and healthcare team members in care planning

  • Administer medications, IV therapy, and treatments accurately
  • Initiate emergency procedures when necessary
  • Delegate and coordinate duties of LPN and Hospice Aide staff
  • Document and verbally communicate patient status and care plans to healthcare professionals
  • Communicate therapeutically with patients, families, and visitors
  • Educate patients and families using teaching/learning principles
  • Manage daily patient assignments and set priorities
  • Monitor nursing care delivered by ancillary personnel
  • Coordinate patient activities with other disciplines
  • Develop, document, and implement patient teaching and discharge planning records
  • Participate in patient, family, staff, and student education programs
  • Identify patient-care problems and resolve or refer them to appropriate resources

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Associate degree from an accredited School of Nursing required
  • Bachelor’s degree required within 3 years of start date; BSN preferred
  • Minimum of 2 years of relevant clinical experience, preferably in long-term care, hospice, palliative, or home care
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English
  • Ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant
  • Ability to deal tactfully with personnel, residents, family members, visitors, government agencies/personnel, and the general public
  • Interpersonal oral and written communication skills for educating and comforting patients and families, maintaining hospital contacts, and documenting records
  • Proficiency in developing nursing plans of care, implementing nursing care, and evaluating outcomes
  • Current registration with the Maryland State Board of Examiners of Nurses as a registered nurse
  • Ability to stand and walk almost constantly, up to 90% of work time
  • Ability to lift and position patients, up to 50% of work time
  • Ability to concentrate, pay close attention to detail, and work in stressful situations
  • Ability to move intermittently throughout the workday
  • Ability to cope with mental and emotional stress
  • Ability to see and hear adequately, with prosthetics if needed
  • Ability to function independently with flexibility and personal integrity
  • Ability to work effectively with residents, personnel, and support agencies
  • Must meet the facility’s general health requirements, including medical and physical examinations
  • Ability to work with ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset, and sometimes hostile people
  • Ability to work in conditions involving possible exposure to noise, dust, temperature variation, adverse conditions, and communicable diseases
