About the role

  • Do you want to gain experience programming robotic arms and deploying machine learning models in simulation and on real hardware?
  • Manufacturing processes are the subject of a large body of current research in robotics.
  • In modern production, roughly 50% of time and 30% of costs in the overall production cycle are spent on assembly.
  • Robots offer an ideal solution for repetitive assembly tasks and are already widely used in highly efficient industrial production.
  • A key challenge is automated manufacturing under uncertainties in part poses and geometries, which we address using machine learning methods.
  • Transfer of real manufacturing tasks into simulation as digital twins
  • Automated generation of large datasets through augmentation
  • Training (Reinforcement/Imitation Learning) of large base models (Vision–Language–Action) using simulation and real-world data
  • Transferring resulting policies from simulation to real robot hardware (Sim2Real transfer)
  • Investigating discrepancies between system behavior in simulation and reality (Sim2Real gap) based on different system dynamics, sensor noise, contact modeling, and calibration errors
  • Adapting the simulation and implementing methods to increase the robustness of Sim2Real transfer

Requirements

  • You are studying information systems engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, mechatronics, or a comparable degree program
  • You are interested in robotics and ideally have experience with GPU simulators such as NVIDIA Isaac and motion planning software like MoveIt or cuRobo
  • You are interested in physical applications of machine learning and ideally have basic knowledge of reinforcement and imitation learning as well as popular PyTorch- or JAX-based frameworks
  • You enjoy working independently and have experience with Python as well as basic knowledge of software development and documentation.
Benefits
  • Set your schedule: Benefit from flexible working hours that can be easily combined with your studies.
  • Join a creative team: Experience an open and collegial working atmosphere where your ideas are valued.
  • Variety that inspires: Look forward to varied tasks that will inspire and challenge you.
  • Help shape the future: Participate in applied research and put your theoretical knowledge into practice.
  • Exciting innovations: Work on interesting, forward-looking projects that make a real difference.
