About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Provide Pharmacy Technician support services for the inmate population at FCI Gilmer
- Assist the staff pharmacist with ordering, stocking, storing, and dispensing prescription and non-prescription medications
- Prepare Pill Line medication cards and unit-dose medications for Pyxis
- Maintain pharmacy inventory, narcotics counts, needle and syringe inventories, stock records, and automated dispensing systems
- Check for outdated medications and restock supplies
- Maintain clean and orderly pharmacy areas
- Use the Bureau of Prisons electronic medical record and complete computer documentation
- Schedule patients, prepare institutional call-outs, scan and file documents, type memoranda, answer telephones, and perform clerical duties
- Apply pharmacy, medical equipment, automated-system, safety, and infection-control procedures
- Participate in performance-improvement and quality-assurance activities
- Receive patients, explain procedures, submit reports, and follow Bureau of Prisons and institutional health-services policies
- Maintain communication with the Clinical Director, Health Services Administrator, and Contracting Officer’s Representative
- Maintain institutional security, report inmate rule violations, and comply with access, identification, Privacy Act, and safety requirements
- Attend the Institution Familiarization Orientation Program before beginning institutional duties
- Provide services five days per week, normally Monday through Friday, with approximately 35 sessions or hours weekly
- Be available for emergencies and accommodate schedule changes caused by institutional needs, security matters, weather, equipment problems, and correctional-environment variability
Requirements
What you’ll need- Completed a formal Pharmacy Technician Program
- Satisfactorily completed an internship
- At least one year of Pharmacy Technician experience
- Current Basic Life Support cardiopulmonary resuscitation certification
- Knowledge of pharmacy methods, techniques, and procedures
- Knowledge of medical equipment and automated systems
- Knowledge of safety principles and infection-control requirements in a patient-care environment
- Ability to relate and deal effectively with physicians, peers, inmates, and others
- Ability to recognize, report, and record changes in a patient’s physical or emotional condition
- Ability to administer medication
- Working knowledge of technical computer systems related to pharmacy operations
- Must attend the Institution Familiarization Orientation Program before beginning institutional duties
- Must comply with institutional safety, custody, conduct, identification, accountability, access, and Privacy Act requirements
- Must maintain a professional relationship with inmates and report institutional-rule violations
- Must wear appropriate professional attire; khaki or green clothing is prohibited
- Must be flexible regarding schedule changes and available for emergencies
- May be required to submit tuberculosis or other communicable-disease testing or evidence of immunity
- Must report adverse regulatory actions involving Pharmacy Technician certification or licensure
- Experience in a correctional environment is preferred but not required
