About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Plan and prioritize survey activities for prospective and active bridge sites
Review site information, bridge requests, maps, aerial imagery, Fika Collect records, and field observations
Participate in preliminary technical site assessments and advise on survey scope, control, access constraints, and bridge alignment options
Establish and document durable benchmarks and horizontal and vertical control points
Undertake detailed topographic surveys of bridge crossing sites
Survey high-water marks, flood evidence, channel geometry, and other information supporting engineering and hydraulic assessment
Download, back up, process, organize, and quality-check raw survey data
Prepare survey packages including coordinate lists, profiles, cross-sections, drawings, photographs, and field notes
Check field data for accuracy, completeness, closure, consistency, and design suitability
Review and quality-assure survey outputs from councils, consultants, contractors, and local partners
Maintain survey files, version-controlled records, coordinates, drawings, instrument logs, and documentation through as-built verification
Update geospatial and site-status information in Fika Collect and approved data repositories
Establish, transfer, and protect construction control points and benchmarks
Set out bridge centerlines, foundations, abutments, towers or anchorage locations, approach works, and other survey-dependent elements
Check line, level, position, and dimensions at construction hold points
Verify contractor and partner survey stations and construction control
Conduct as-built surveys and prepare as-built records
Report material deviations to the responsible engineer and Zambia Program Manager
Support training and field coaching for government engineers, technical staff, surveyors, contractors, and Fika staff
Support preparation of survey-related training materials, checklists, standard operating practices, and demonstrations
Provide technical support during joint field activities
Participate in technical and stakeholder meetings and communicate survey findings
Maintain, calibrate, test, and securely manage survey equipment and records
Plan field requirements including equipment, batteries, transport, documentation, and data backups
Follow quality, safety, safeguarding, security, and environmental procedures
Provide regular updates on survey progress, data quality, field constraints, equipment status, and issues

Requirements

What you’ll need

Diploma or bachelor's degree in Land Surveying, Geomatics, Geospatial Engineering, Civil Engineering with strong surveying specialization, or a closely related field
Minimum five years of relevant surveying experience, preferably on bridges, roads, river crossings, or other civil infrastructure projects
Experience in remote rural environments is strongly preferred
Competence in topographic surveying, construction setting-out, control surveys, leveling, cross-sections, longitudinal profiles, and as-built surveys
Proficiency with total stations, GNSS/RTK or differential GPS, automatic or digital levels, and field data collectors
Proficiency in AutoCAD
Working knowledge of GIS software such as QGIS or ArcGIS, coordinate systems, georeferencing, and digital/mobile data-collection tools is highly desirable
Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word
Experience reviewing or quality-assuring survey work is an advantage
Experience training or coaching technical staff and working with government institutions, local authorities, and private-sector partners is desirable
Membership or eligibility for registration with an appropriate professional body in Zambia is an advantage
Clear written and verbal communication in English
Ability to work independently after receiving clear technical direction
Ability to work constructively across cultures and with government, community, contractor, consultant, and Fika teams
Commitment to professional ethics, safety, accountability, and respectful partnership
Ability to travel frequently to bridge sites across Zambia, including remote rural areas
Ability to participate in field activities involving difficult terrain, carrying or setting up survey equipment, and variable weather
