About the role
- Take full ownership of the grant lifecycle across federal, state, and private foundation sources—build out grant infrastructure, partner with program teams on budgets and contracts, manage monthly requisitions, revenue recognition, journal entries, budget adjustments, and deliver financial reports.
- Ensure ironclad compliance with federal, state, and local grant regulations plus Uniform Guidance; oversee timely submission of all required reports and maintain strong relationships with grantor agencies.
- Own preparation of detailed fiscal reports for both internal and external stakeholders; provide audit schedules, work papers, and variance analysis to support audits and reviews.
- Continuously refine and update financial and grant policies, internal controls, and procedures; keep the organization aligned with GAAP, GASB, and evolving grant management standards.
- Work closely with Grant Managers, Finance Director, Program Directors, and external partners to ensure financial management supports program objectives and organizational priorities.
Requirements
- Seasoned in managing federal grants with a strong preference for Head Start experience to ensure seamless knowledge transfer alongside a retiring tenured accountant, maintaining continuity in this critical funding area.
- Deep accounting fundamentals with solid GAAP and Uniform Guidance know-how; capable of handling grant compliance and reporting accurately.
- Collaborative, mission-driven mindset: team player who builds strong relationships with program managers and grantors, thinks strategically about the bigger picture, and is genuinely invested in the nonprofit’s mission and impact.
