About the role

  • Develop and prepare engineering designs, construction drawings, and supporting documentation for electric and gas distribution projects related to new business and franchise relocations
  • Review project scopes, site plans, utility maps, and customer requirements to determine design approach and material specifications
  • Coordinate with SDG&E engineering teams, construction crews, local municipalities, permitting agencies, and third-party stakeholders to facilitate project approvals and scheduling
  • Support estimating and material ordering activities by preparing bills of materials and cost estimates
  • Perform technical reviews to ensure designs comply with SDG&E standards, applicable codes, and safety requirements
  • Track project status and maintain accurate records in SDG&E’s work management systems
  • Address design revisions, field changes, and as-built documentation throughout the project lifecycle
  • Participate in regular project meetings and provide updates on design progress, issues, and risk mitigation plans
  • Provide technical guidance and quality assurance for junior designers or drafters as needed

Requirements

  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in engineering, Drafting/Design, Construction Management, or a related discipline, or equivalent experience
  • 3+ years of experience supporting utility engineering and design projects (electric or gas distribution preferred)
  • Familiarity with SDG&E standards, General Orders (GO 95, GO 128), and CPUC regulations strongly desired
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD, MicroStation, or other design software
  • Understanding of permitting processes, right-of-way considerations, and municipal coordination
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills to interface with internal teams and external stakeholders
