About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Provide engineering support on technical matters throughout the development process, focusing on BESS equipment technical approval
- Evaluate equipment for inclusion on the Approved Vendor List (AVL) for BESS projects
- Support factory visits and Factory Acceptance Testing of BESS equipment
- Coordinate with Regulated & Renewable Energy, Supply Chain, and Energy Storage Development on the BESS AVL
- Evaluate and mitigate commercial risks associated with proposed project designs
- Support detailed design, construction, and commissioning of front-of-the-meter distribution-connected and transmission-connected energy storage projects
- Collaborate with internal business units, external suppliers, consultants, system integrators, and EPC firms
- Work with Supply Chain on RFPs for EPC and key equipment components
- Own the BESS AVL and develop supplier relationships
- Support BESS system design and output optimization
- Evaluate spare parts and lifecycle requirements for BESS equipment
- Support greenfield and brownfield development through site screening, feasibility studies, preliminary design, cost estimates, and technical due diligence
- Design battery facilities, including electrical systems, power and energy sizing, one-line diagrams, equipment selection, physical site layout, and site access
- Analyze conductor sizing, capacity testing, reactive power, and system protection
- Develop augmentation or overbuild strategies for energy storage projects
- Prepare technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations, and design plans
- Develop optimization tools for energy storage, microgrid, and solar-plus-storage projects
- Monitor technology advancements, market trends, best practices, guidelines, and standards
- Advise business stakeholders on energy storage technology trends
- Travel regularly to domestic and international supplier manufacturing facilities
Requirements
What you’ll need- Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET-accredited four-year college or university program required
- Master's degree in engineering may be considered in lieu of the bachelor's engineering degree
- Minimum of 8 years of engineering experience
- Registration as a Professional Engineer
- Understanding of battery energy storage systems (BESS)
- Familiarity with or advanced knowledge of traditional synchronous generation, solar, or wind
- Experience with BESS and microgrid project engineering
- Knowledge of electric generating facilities and utility interconnection requirements
- Knowledge of inverter/plant control, metering schemes, and power system steady-state analysis
- Power system modeling using tools such as PSSE/TARA, CYME, PSCAD, and MATLAB
- Coursework in power systems analysis, power electronics, drive/converter controls, and/or fault analysis
- IEEE, NFPA, and UL code experience
- Ability to work independently with limited guidance
- Generation engineering support experience with IBR and synchronous generation desired
- Experience with factory visits, FAT testing, and supplier evaluations desired
- Electric utility industry and generation plant design experience desired
- Knowledge of FERC and state generation interconnection desired
- Power system transient stability, dynamic study, and/or converter control experience desired
- Project management proficiency
- Ability to read and comprehend technical drawings, graphs, maps, and technical documents
- Ability to work lawfully in the U.S. without employment-based immigration sponsorship
- Willingness and ability to travel approximately 15–25%
