About the role
- This position is accountable for the development of advanced automation solutions within the Power Grid Operations Distribution (PGO-D) system.
- Developing, testing, and commissioning of planned island (microgrid) automation controllers, energy storage gateways, high-speed switching edge controllers, and other non-standard projects.
- Provides technical expertise with industrial coding, testing, and deployment.
- Support field commissioning activities and implementation support for projects.
- Support automation devices lifecycle management, including assessment and firmware management for supporting standard updates or cybersecurity initiatives.
- Provide routine technical guidance to internal staff and other teammates.
- Interfacing with and managing external engineering consultants on various projects.
- Provide telecom expertise and guidance to develop or revise solutions needed for Operational Technology (OT) projects.
- Support the Control Hardware in the Loop lab for testing and development.
- Contributes to team decision-making in the accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities.
- Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and sketches related to well-defined problems and analysis of increasing scope and complexity.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering
- eight (8) years related work experience
- Professional Engineer
- Demonstrated leadership skills to establish, maintain, and grow a motivated and productive staff
- Working knowledge of SEL RTAC Programming
- Working knowledge of industrial communications protocols such as Modbus, DNP3, etc
- Familiarity with IEC 61850 – GOOSE, Sampled Value (SV) protocols
- Familiarity with Relay IEC 61131 (Structured Text) Programming
- Strong knowledge of network switch configuration, ports/interfaces requirements, VLANs, and protocol support
- General understanding of electric system protection
- Working knowledge of RTDS hardware and integrating equipment for testing
- Experience with developing models for power system studies, CYME, ETAP, SKM, PSCAD, RSCAD
- Working knowledge of Duke Energy specific software: DSCADA, Distribution Management System, and planning tools.
