About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Plan, direct, and coordinate activities of the managed HIM functional unit
- Manage and supervise staff
- Communicate and collaborate with the HIM Department and DHTS
- Plan daily workflow and work assignments
- Monitor assignments to ensure daily coverage
- Liaise with hospital and clinic personnel to resolve problems and concerns and ensure electronic health record integrity
- Review work queues daily, identify priorities, resolve target-achievement problems, and adjust assignments
- Apply state and federal laws and regulatory requirements applicable to the work unit
- Ensure quality, timeliness, and customer satisfaction metrics are met
- Recruit, select, orient, and train new staff with the HIM System Manager
- Identify professional development needs, initiate continued development training, and monitor progress
- Monitor staff productivity and quality expectations
- Recommend performance standards and complete annual performance reviews with the HIM System Manager
- Serve as technical expert for staff questions, problems, and difficult customer situations
- Recommend departmental policies and procedures, including documentation and testing of database logic needs
- Provide timely verbal and written responses to internal and external customers
- Develop operating goals and objectives; recommend, implement, and administer operating protocols and procedures
- Participate in employee engagement initiatives based on work culture scores and action plans
- Perform other related duties as required
Requirements
What you’ll need- High school diploma required
- Bachelor's degree in a related field preferred
- 6 years of experience in a progressive healthcare setting required; associate's degree in healthcare or business may substitute for two years, and bachelor's degree may substitute for four years
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Data entry experience
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
- Knowledge of standard medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology
- Critical thinking and ability to collect and analyze complex problems
- Ability to organize, prioritize, and multitask accurately
- Strong customer service background and ability to work under pressure and time constraints
- Ability to create and apply department policies, rules, and regulations for verifying patient information, collecting payments, and maintaining records and forms
- Knowledge and application of situational leadership skills
- Ability to lead teams and maintain effective relationships with personnel
- Knowledge of general accounting principles
- Knowledge of HIS and Epic EHR strongly preferred
- RHIT or RHIA strongly preferred
