About the role

  • Provides tax advice to appropriate representatives of DTE Energy and its subsidiaries, including counseling the Tax organization on corporate tax planning and controversy matters (federal, state, local and property tax).
  • Relies on knowledge of tax law and business perspective to derive solutions that meet company needs.
  • Leads others in plans and execution and can lead teams or coordinate with other areas to provide tax advice.
  • Analyzes tax problems, interprets tax laws and regulations.
  • Knowledge of company structure, general departments and operations.
  • Advanced knowledge of tax principles and procedures related to the subject matter of the attorney's area of practice and/or leadership management skills.
  • Demonstrates ability to be creative in approaching legal/tax matters and controversy resolution.
  • Established resource for the organization on complex tax issues.
  • Work with businesses and other tax professionals to identify and assess the economic and financial implications of different transactions.
  • Reviews tax and business aspects of financial models.
  • Partner with tax planners and business groups in advising on tax issues.
  • Work with tax operations group in assessing how transactions are reported and assuring compliance with all laws.
  • Accepts increasingly complex or sensitive legal projects and sees that they are effectively resolved.
  • Works with minimum supervision.
  • Anticipate potential legal issues and identify solutions.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited law school and is admitted to a state bar
  • Typically has 10+ years of professional experience in federal and state tax matters involving multiple legal entities and partnerships
  • Preferred Previous Big 4 or larger corporation experience
  • CPA
  • Strong analytical and advisory skills, including the ability to review, evaluate and counsel business units on complex and routine tax questions relating to various taxation issues.
  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with business units and senior management, outside legal counsel and opposing party's counsel.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with other tax professionals and staff.
  • Highly proficient computer skills and the ability to learn new information technology systems with ease.
  • Ability to take responsibility for multiple projects.
  • Understanding of basic financial reporting and GAAP principles.
