About the role
- As an Engineering Team Manager, you will manage and grow a team of talented engineers, focusing primarily on people - their development, motivation, and performance.
- You'll help shape how we work and scale as a team, creating an environment where engineers thrive, collaborate effectively, and deliver their best work.
- You'll work closely with the Head of Engineering to strengthen our structure, ensure alignment with business goals, and support the professional growth of every engineer in your team.
- Lead, mentor and coach a team of engineers - guiding them through challenges, supporting their growth, and fostering a culture of trust and accountability.
- Shape the environment where engineers can do their best work - improving clarity, removing blockers, and helping teams deliver consistently.
- Partner with other Team Managers to align priorities, identify cross-squad dependencies, and ensure consistency across engineering.
- Working closely with our Talent Acquisition team to attract and hire great people - helping shape role descriptions, participating in interviews, and ensuring new hires are onboarded effectively.
- Own your team's development conversations, competency reviews, and personal development plans, ensuring progression and recognition are fair and transparent.
- Build strong relationships with Product and other stakeholders to translate business goals into clear, achievable outcomes.
- Help shape and maintain engineering standards - technical quality, secure development practices, and a culture of continuous improvement.
- Champion change - modernising how we deliver software and fostering a mindset of learning, feedback, and innovation.
Requirements
- Deeply people-focused - you take pride in seeing others grow, learn, and succeed
- Proven experience managing and developing engineers at different levels
- Skilled in coaching, feedback, and performance conversations
- Experienced in using competency frameworks and PDPs to guide growth and progression
- Able to build high-performing teams, set clear expectations, and maintain accountability
- Strong communicator - able to translate between technical and non-technical audiences, bringing clarity and alignment
- Comfortable driving cultural and process change that improves how teams work together
- Solid foundation in software engineering - ideally with experience in PHP (Laravel), Vue.js, and AWS (ECS, EC2, RDS, SQS, Lambda), or similar technologies
- Understands modern development practices - CI/CD, testing, monitoring, and version control
- Pragmatic approach to technical decision-making - focusing on value, quality, and delivery
- Understanding of standards such as Cyber Essentials, ISO 27001, SOC II, or GDPR, and their implications for secure development and delivery
