About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Report to the Director of Technology AI
- Contribute as a key member of the Advanced AI team, Digital Catapult’s core AI research unit
- Lead original AI/ML research at Technology Readiness Level 3 and above
- Develop intellectual property and organisational capabilities in cutting-edge AI technologies
- Build academic and industry partnerships bridging early-stage research and industrial application
- Develop industrial R&D funding proposals for Innovate UK, EPSRC, ARIA and Horizon Europe
- Lead delivery of R&D projects
- Contribute to the AAIT AI research strategy, AI Technology Roadmap and Radar
- Own and define a research area and plan aligned with other Digital Catapult teams
- Mentor junior team members in AI and operations
- Participate in open innovation activities as an AI/ML expert
- Provide technical consulting to startups and corporates
- Act as an AI thought leader and source of expertise across the organisation
Requirements
What you’ll need- PhD in AI/ML, AI or related field, with demonstrated ability to conduct research at that level
- Research experience particularly in agentic AI, neuro-symbolic AI, reinforcement learning, machine learning, physics-informed neural networks, probabilistic reasoning and uncertainty quantification
- Experience delivering complex AI/ML projects in industry
- Strong leadership, analytical and communication skills
- Experience presenting research to business, technical and political audiences
- Ability to present complex issues simply
- Broad technical architecture and hands-on experience with machine learning, deep learning and data science technologies, algorithms, software tools and hardware
- Proactive, self-confident and adaptable, with ability to handle ambiguity and changing priorities
- Ability to identify new opportunities and work collaboratively
- Successful completion of Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) clearance before employment
