About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Perform outreach and engagement into local evidence-based treatment for people experiencing substance misuse and mental health challenges
  • Create supportive relationships with individuals seeking treatment and link them to appropriate resources
  • Facilitate peer recovery support services in group and/or individual settings
  • Assist participants with personal recovery plans and provide resources to reduce barriers to care
  • Assist patients with necessary paperwork and document appropriately
  • Partner with treatment providers, hospitals, Emergency Departments, harm reduction organizations, support services, law enforcement, and community-based organizations
  • Participate in community meetings addressing substance misuse and mental health challenges
  • Assist patients in accessing therapeutic and supportive services
  • Promote personal growth, development, and recovery
  • Mentor and role-model, aid in goal setting and skills building, and remove barriers to follow-up care
  • Advocate for people in recovery and support others in achieving and maintaining recovery

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Minimum 1 year of lived experience of recovery from substance use and/or successful management of mental health challenges
  • Completion of at least 60 hours of peer support specialist training, or willingness to complete it within 6 months of employment
  • Approved training must count toward CPFS, NCPRSS, or an equivalent peer certification
  • Equivalent peer training hours must be approved by an IC&RC-recognized board
  • Strong, effective, responsive communication skills
  • Excellent customer service
  • Organization and attention to detail
  • Ability and willingness to share personal recovery experience helpfully
  • Must honor, support, and accept all pathways to recovery
  • Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel
  • Ability to operate a copier and scanner
  • Cross-cultural skills and experience with culturally diverse populations
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug test after a conditional offer for safety-sensitive positions
