About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Design, implement, and maintain features in a Ruby on Rails service for the payments offering on the BigCommerce platform
Ensure production-grade functionality with appropriate test coverage, instrumentation, and documentation
Troubleshoot production issues and contribute to post-incident reviews
Optimize queries and performance while adhering to security protocols
Work with operations and infrastructure to improve architecture and scale back-end services
Engage in technical discussions about solutions and architectures
Collaborate with product and design teams on feature specifications and timelines
Build testable and extensible features
Mentor engineers and review code to maintain quality and security
Support an open, positive, energized culture and foster continuous improvement
Ensure technical decisions support quality, performance, scalability, reliability, availability, and security

Requirements

What you’ll need

3+ years of professional backend development experience focused on Ruby on Rails
Understanding of building and operating production-grade systems, including logs, traces, metrics, feature flags, and live-traffic debugging
Familiarity with Prometheus, Grafana, Sentry, and Lightstep
Understanding of Domain-Driven Design
Experience integrating third-party APIs and services, particularly nuanced payment-flow state transitions
Bachelor's degree in CS, EE, SW, CE, or MIS is preferred, or equivalent experience, or completion of a comprehensive software engineering boot camp
Experience with continuous integration and ownership of tasks across the development cycle
Experience developing high-performance, scalable, and available web services and applications
Experience with PHP and Scala is preferred
