About the role
- Perform independent circuit turn-ups using established procedures.
- Troubleshoot common IP Core issues without assistance.
- Configure and validate routers, switches, firewalls following existing guides.
- Execute standard network change activities.
- Update network drawings and documentation after changes.
- Coordinate with field staff during remote hands activities and oversee their work where necessary.
- Validate alarms, link states and service health conditions, escalate appropriately.
- Provide clear and complete updates in maintenance windows, outage calls and vendor escalations.
- Document troubleshooting steps, findings and final resolutions in tickets and after action reports.
- Coordinate with Optical Transport and Access teams for uplink handoffs and service turn-up dependencies.
- Communicate expectations and instructions clearly to field techs during remote tasks.
- Produce accurate, timely handoff notes during emergency work and/or outages.
- Own assigned work from start to finish, including planning, coordination, execution and follow-up.
- Provide informal guidance to Associates when needed.
- Demonstrate consistent adherence to change control and quality standards.
- Participate in technical discussions, sharing observations or recommendations as appropriate.
- Identify documentation gaps or outdated drawings and recommend updates.
- Suggest improvements to SOPs, templates or workflows based on repeated issues.
- Approach low-to-medium complexity problems with structured troubleshooting methods.
- Contribute ideas for improving network efficiency or build consistency.
- Perform high accuracy physical and logical work with minimal rework required.
- Maintain clean and accurate documentation for tasks, including appropriate metrics and measurements.
- Follow all standards, templates and naming conventions consistently.
- Validate work completed by field resources when performing remote oversight.
- Participate in periodic QC checks of sites, racks, cabling and documentation.
Requirements
- 5–7 years of relatable experience in network engineering or a similar technical role.
- Good understanding of IP Core routing and switching fundamentals: routing (OSPF, MPLS, BGP, ACLs) and switching (spanning tree, vlans, SVIs, e-lan, e-line)
- Expert knowledge of equipment such as Cisco, Juniper, Ciena and Arrista equipment.
- Understand Service Provider things like TPIA, Transit, Peering, CDN Caching
- Intermediate familiarity with NMS tools (Kentik, iglass, mrtg)
- Ability to interpret and create documentation, network drawings, and plans and BOMs.
- Able to independently follow SOPs, maintenance templates and contribute to incremental updates.
- Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Comfortable participating in triage calls and contributing meaningful information.
- Skilled in documenting circuits, changes and network metrics in a consistent format.
- Demonstrates judgment on when to escalate issues to senior engineers.
- Shows increasing autonomy in managing workloads and deadlines.
- Consistently follows best practices and encourages others to do the same.
- Demonstrates reliability during maintenance windows and high impact work.
- Maturity in decision making, knowing when to take action and when to request help.
- Demonstrates curiosity by exploring advanced features of various vendor platforms without overstepping.
- Ability to break down problems into smaller components and analyze root causes.
- Willingness to contribute ideas backed by observation or data.
- High attention to detail in both physical installations and documentation.
- Strong understanding of the impact of improper network configurations and errors on customers and stability.
- Consistently produces reliable and repeatable results under varying conditions.
- Demonstrates pride in quality: clean cable runs and installations, correct labeling and accurate documentation.
