About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Meet, interview, and confer with clients through office meetings; monitor and document progress
  • Gather demographic, driving, and criminal information
  • Explain probation terms and make referrals consistent with court orders
  • Administer alcohol and drug tests
  • Monitor clients through Electronic Reporting Services (ERS) and other means under a Probation Officer's direction
  • Track and monitor cases within and outside the jurisdiction
  • Prepare, update, and submit progress updates, court appearance paperwork, home-visit logs, location reports, and databases
  • Answer questions, refer clients, and verify completion of probation conditions
  • Verify restitution, community service, substance use programming, defensive driving, fines, and court costs
  • Report probation violations to the Chief Probation Officer or designated officer
  • Conduct community visits and support district operations
  • Travel between the Grand Island and Kearney offices and occasionally attend regional orientation, training, and educational workshops

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Associate degree in criminal justice, office management, medical/laboratory, or a related area, or one year of experience as a drug technician, office management, secretary/office support, or related position
  • Candidates receiving their degree within 120 days of application may be considered
  • Educational credits must be granted by an accredited institution approved by the U.S. Department of Education
  • Knowledge of probation services principles, practices, and procedures
  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and procedures
  • Knowledge of the community and its resources
  • Knowledge of Judicial Branch rules, regulations, and procedures
  • Knowledge of current probation practices, techniques, and procedures
  • Knowledge of report writing, interviewing techniques, and tracking technologies
  • Ability to make home visits
  • Ability to organize time, set priorities, and work under stressful conditions
  • Ability to meet recurring deadlines
  • Ability to interview clients and track client locations
  • Ability to use probation and protective techniques
  • Ability to apply applicable laws, rules, and regulations
  • Ability to prepare activity reports and update databases
  • Ability to operate computers and applicable software applications
  • Ability to use communication and interpersonal skills to exchange information and receive work direction
  • Ability to travel regularly within the district and between offices
  • Ability to work occasional evenings, weekends, and holidays
