About the role

  • The Waste Collection Unit is responsible for residential waste collection programs and services (including garbage, recycling, organics, yard waste and leaves) for the two collection zones assigned to the City (114,119 households currently).
  • The incumbent plans, organizes, coordinates and controls collection activities for Collection Operations.
  • The incumbent assigns and supervises the work of employees performing trades related to residential waste collection within a designated area of the City of Ottawa.
  • Activities include the collection of waste, recyclables (blue and black boxes), leaves, yard waste and organics.

Requirements

  • High school diploma (Grade 12)
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience in recyclable and waste collection, including prior supervisory experience
  • Proficiency in software such as Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook
  • Extensive knowledge of personnel and equipment resources and policies and procedures related to waste collection
  • Extensive knowledge of the performance capabilities of equipment used in waste collection activities
  • Knowledge of the routes and streets within the contract-assigned area
  • Thorough knowledge of City policies, procedures and regulations
  • Knowledge of human resources practices
  • Knowledge of human resources practices, including the interpretation and application of collective agreements
  • Practical knowledge of relevant health and safety regulations, awareness of potential or actual health and safety hazards in the workplace, and knowledge of appropriate measures to ensure the health and safety of staff in accordance with City regulations, policies and procedures.
