About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Collect data identifying patients with malignancy and document disease type, extent, treatment, and survival
  • Identify and provide data for ongoing research investigations
  • Ensure the quality of statistical data
  • Provide prolonged clinical patient follow-up to assess patient outcomes and quality of care
  • Review Pathology, Cytology, Radiation Oncology, Nuclear Medicine, and New Patient Registration reports
  • Identify new malignant cases and reportable benign cases
  • Abstract core information from patients’ medical records
  • Enter data according to State of California mandatory reporting and ACoS guidelines
  • Provide follow-up information to outside Cancer Registries and physicians
  • Retrieve data for clinicians, epidemiologists, and cancer research projects
  • Assist the supervisor in identifying issues for Cancer Committee or Quality Assurance Committee review
  • Maintain liaison with medical and allied health communities, health organizations, professional societies, and Cancer Registries

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Post-high-school vocational/specialized training
  • 2 years in an allied health profession with at least 1 year as a Cancer Registrar, or completion of a Cancer Information Management program or equivalent
  • Passing the CTR exam within one year of employment if not already certified
  • Working knowledge of anatomy and physiology
  • Working knowledge of basic statistics
  • Working knowledge of medical records operations
  • Current certification by the National Cancer Registrars Association, or procurement of CTR certification by passing the CTR exam within one year of employment
