About the role
- Assist in providing external tax providers with the necessary information to ensure the accuracy and completeness of federal and state income tax filings
- Prepare supporting tax workpapers to assist in the preparation of federal and state income tax returns
- Assist with the preparation of income tax provisions and related calculations
- Research and analyze various tax positions and provide recommendations based on findings
- Support efforts to build and enhance the internal state and local tax function
- Assist in conducting nexus study to evaluate the company’s state and local tax exposure and compliance requirements
- Review sales and use tax returns for accuracy and compliance, ensuring timely filings
- Manage property tax assessments and filings as necessary
- Routinely assess the Avalara sales tax engine to ensure accurate tax calculations and collection of taxes from customers
- Assist with handling of notices and management of future audits
- Partner with other business functions to manage sales tax exemption certificate reviews and ensure adherence to tax rules
- Support technology and process improvement initiatives to streamline the tax function and enhance operational efficiencies
- Provide tax insights and education to other departments as needed to ensure alignment with business goals
- Support Head of Tax in various tax planning opportunities
- Help monitor changes in state tax laws and regulations and assess their impact on the organization
- Identify opportunities for tax savings or planning strategies, particularly in the context of state and local taxes
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in accounting or finance required
- 3-5+ years of relevant tax experience in a corporate tax department, public accounting firm, or similar setting. Strong focus on SALT is preferred
- Experience with partnership taxation is preferred
- Strong attention to detail and excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to drive tasks to completion autonomously.
- Strong accounting skills, including ability to collect, prepare and analyze data and information to reconstruct, detect, support, or refute a position and ensure that the explanation provided reconciles with the underlying data
- Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
- Proficient in Excel and comfortable with large sets of data
- Experience with the Avalara sales tax engine is preferred
