About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Provides advanced vision care to patients and schedules ophthalmic surgical procedures under the direct supervision of an Ophthalmologist.
  • Ensures optimal patient care by adhering to Medical Center policies and procedures.
  • Maintains patient records and documents to ensure an accurate record of the patient’s medical and nursing care, to include computer systems as necessary.
  • Demonstrates ability to intake histories/chief complaint and prepare patient for examination.
  • Demonstrates competencies in applanation to determine intraocular pressure.
  • Assists the Ophthalmologist is pre/post-operative care.
  • Demonstrates ability to educate and schedule patients for surgical procedures.
  • Demonstrates ability to determine a patient’s prescription with the proper use of a phoroptor.
  • Ability to prepare the proper instruments and assist the Ophthalmologist with any and all, inter office surgical procedures.
  • Demonstrates competencies in all aspects of current ophthalmic testing equipment, Visual Field, OCT, PHP, and IOL Master.
  • May chart on behalf of the provider when in the exam room. Chart note to include name, title, date and time of the entry. Chart must then be signed off on by the provider.
  • Understands and demonstrates proper sterile/aseptic technique when assisting in applicable departments.
  • Supports an environment conducive to professional practice by functioning as a role model and resource person.
  • Schedule ophthalmic surgical procedures in coordination with physicians, anesthesia, and operating room staff.
  • Obtain and verify physician orders for surgical procedures.
  • Serve as a liaison between patients, physicians, anesthesia and OR personnel.
  • Confirm surgery dates, pre-operative requirements, and post-operative appointments.
  • Assist with billing coordination and ensure required documentation is completed.
  • Provide technical, clinical and patient support throughout the surgical process.

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Must have JCAHPO Certified Ophthalmic Assistant certification within 18 months of position hire date.
