About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Lead assigned Value for Money audits from planning through client fieldwork and reporting
  • Take responsibility for audit quality, timeliness, and budget adherence
  • Define project scope, goals, and deliverables with stakeholders
  • Develop project plans, identify risks, and manage overruns
  • Prepare documentation, reports, internal moderation submissions, and Auditor’s Annual Reports
  • Present reports to client Audit Committees when required
  • Lead and support graduate and assistant manager work
  • Coach, mentor, develop, and manage the performance of team members
  • Lead initial scoping meetings with audit teams and escalate key issues
  • Manage scheduling and relationships across multiple stakeholders
  • Lead client interviews and support team members in delivery
  • Communicate findings and provide updates to Portfolio Holders and Audit Teams
  • Review work for consistency between documentation, findings, and evidence
  • Ensure compliance with deadlines, mandatory training, time recording policies, and quality standards
  • Support Directors in identifying and mitigating portfolio and team risks
  • Promote the VFM team and identify growth and additional service opportunities
  • Drive continuous improvement, efficiencies, best practices, and thought leadership
  • Champion inclusion and address inappropriate behaviour in line with firm policy

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Proven recent experience leading audit or assurance projects, ideally within a Value for Money or public sector context
  • Strong project management and stakeholder engagement skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to coach, develop, and manage team performance
  • High attention to detail and commitment to quality
  • Familiarity with audit methodologies
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office tools, including documentation and reporting
  • Ability to work independently and take ownership of project delivery
  • Experience in value for money auditing, performance auditing, internal audit, or analytical roles in sectors such as the NHS or Local Government
  • Ability to lead others with clarity and purpose
