About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Maintain the vessel's engine room and equipment in a state of readiness
- Perform startup and shutdown, troubleshooting, and heavy maintenance of vessel power and propulsion systems
- Pull heavy lines and hoses
- Work on oil and cargo barges
- Perform general vessel maintenance and other assigned tasks
- Perform preventive maintenance and underway repairs on main engines, gears, pumps, motors, plumbing, deck machinery, towing winches, and auxiliary generator units
- Perform routine periodic maintenance on tug and barge
- Maintain liquid levels and perform lubrication services
- Log maintenance and repairs in an electronic maintenance tracking program
- Monitor and record operating conditions of engine room equipment
- Maintain daily, weekly, and monthly logs with proper readings and times
- Keep the engine room, bilges, z-drive room, and rudder room clean and ready for operation
- Hold engine room watch while underway
- Complete material requisitions and work order forms
- Perform fuel transfers on tug
- Ensure paperwork requirements are met
- Assist in loading supplies
- Clean up tugs and barges
- Operate firefighting and lifesaving equipment aboard
- Perform work as directed by the Captain and Port Engineers
Requirements
What you’ll need- Looking for inland, coastal, licensed and unlicensed engineering positions
- Valid TWIC
- Valid STCW endorsement on MMC
- Two (2) years previous work experience on marine diesels required
- Must be able to comprehend, respond and carry out specific orders from the Captain or immediate supervisor
- Must be able to work independently and without direct supervision
- Ability to learn and apply safety awareness, injury prevention, and firefighting
- Must be able to understand and use information contained in cargo information cards and material safety data sheets
- Valid State Driver's License
- Valid first aid/CPR training certificate
- Complete HAZWOPER training within 30 days of hire
- Ability to work in all weather conditions
- Ability to work at heights as necessary
- Work rotation watch involving 12 hours in a 24-hour period, with occasional hours not exceeding 14 consecutive hours
- Equal time rotation
- Pre-employment drug testing is required
