About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Deliver comprehensive genetic counseling services to patients and families in accordance with established professional practice guidelines
- Analyze intake information and determine whether appropriate appointments have been scheduled
- Assess recurrence risks and recommend medical or genetic testing based on risk, benefit, and cost
- Ensure proper completion of counseling paperwork
- Communicate regularly with medical geneticists and supervising physicians
- Communicate normal and abnormal results and coordinate appropriate follow-up
- Provide crisis intervention and psychosocial counseling; refer patients for ongoing care and support
- Consult referring physicians on specialized genetic information relevant to patient management
- Participate in staff meetings and provide colleague coverage as needed
- Provide genetic counseling according to applicable professional care standards
- Attend continuing education courses and meetings and review medical literature
- Provide case management for complex genetic cases, coordinating recommendations, testing, and ongoing counseling
- Contribute to clinical service quality and development, specialty sections, and specific projects
- Participate in outreach, education, and training activities
- Provide comprehensive genetic counseling for Center for Genomic Medicine programs, including adult and pediatric general and subspecialty clinics as assigned
Requirements
What you’ll need- Master's Degree in Genetic Counseling required
- Minimum of two (2) years of experience in genetic counseling required
- Competency in all genetic counselor core functions required
- American Board Genetic Counselor (ABGC) Certification required upon hire
- ABMG Certified Counselors certified prior to 1991 may still be considered
- California Genetic Counseling License (full or temporary) required upon hire
- Experience in adult genetics and/or pediatric genetics preferred
