About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Lead the mechanical design and specification of water and wastewater systems, including:
  • Produce and review high spec technical documentation, including:
  • Ensure designs comply with industry standards, codes, and regulations (e.g. WRAS, BS/EN standards, local water authority requirements).
  • Carry out technical assurance and independent design reviews.
  • Support projects from concept through detailed design, construction, commissioning, and handover.
  • Liaise with clients, contractors, suppliers, and regulators to resolve technical challenges.
  • Review contractor submissions, method statements, and commissioning plans.
  • Provide site support, inspections, and witness testing where required.
  • Act as a technical authority for water mechanical systems within the business.
  • Mentor and provide guidance to junior engineers and project teams.
  • Contribute to technical strategy, best practice development, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Collaborate closely with civil, electrical, ICA, and process engineering disciplines.

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or relevant discipline
  • Significant experience in water, wastewater, or utilities engineering environments
  • Strong understanding of hydraulics, pumping systems, treatment processes, and mechanical plant
  • Proven ability to deliver high spec, safety critical, or regulated projects
  • Excellent technical writing, problem solving, and communication skills.
  • Chartered or working toward CEng status (IMechE or equivalent) (preferred)
  • Experience with major frameworks, utilities providers, or mission critical facilities (preferred)
  • Knowledge of energy efficiency, resilience, and sustainability principles (preferred)
  • Familiarity with digital design tools (e.g. 3D modelling, BIM environments) (preferred)
