About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Monitor global developments in religious freedom
- Develop strategies, initiatives, and policy responses to assist embassies and other bureaus
- Review unclassified and classified information sources
- Conduct research and draft documents
- Manage data entry within appropriate computer systems
- Facilitate verbal and written communications
- Engage with internal and external stakeholders
- Advise the Ambassador at Large, Senior Official, and office leadership on special projects
- Guide a team of up to three mid- and entry-level contractors
- Establish public communication strategies supporting international religious freedom priorities
- Design proactive messaging campaigns using audience analysis and Department public diplomacy tools
- Propose strategic media engagements for Department and office principals
- Advise leadership on digital messaging initiatives
- Oversee media monitoring, media responses, social media messaging, and communication products
- Track initiatives and communications within the Department of State, with interagency partners, and external NGOs
- Build international alliances and networks promoting freedom of religion or belief
- Ensure policymakers have information on conditions on the ground and developing trends
- Support action assisting negatively affected religious communities in furtherance of U.S. policy priorities
- Report to the Program Manager
Requirements
What you’ll need- Experience supporting policy development and implementation in Washington or overseas
- Proven ability to lead a team
- Ability to navigate complex processes and political sensitivities
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Significant Department briefing experience
- Ability to balance competing demands, multitask, and pivot priorities based on leadership needs
- Experience in human rights
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Knowledge of the Department’s public engagement strategy and policies
- Previous work with GPA or in a press office
- Previous supervisory experience
- Active Secret Clearance required
- Must be able to pass a background check
- May require additional background checks during employment
- Ability to work onsite in the main office
- Ability to use computers and office productivity tools with sufficient speed
- Ability to sit for long periods while looking at a computer screen
- May be required to work outside normal business hours and travel for business or professional development
