About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Assist the Laboratory Revenue Integrity & RCM Manager in managing audits and audit schedules
  • Conduct coding audits for Laboratory Coding & Billing Representatives and Pathologists covering CPT, HCPCS, modifier, and place of service coding
  • Provide one-on-one and group education to team members and Pathologists
  • Conduct billing workflow and charge integrity audits to ensure laboratory orders and charges accurately transmit to EPIC
  • Compile and track audit-process statistics
  • Serve as the department’s senior coding resource
  • Train new billing staff in laboratory coding and billing practices
  • Attend meetings with Pathologists, LIS, Revenue Cycle, and HIM regarding coding and auditing
  • Interpret and analyze billing data to identify and monitor departmental performance and benchmarks
  • Maintain current coding regulations and ensure team members are updated as regulations change
  • Trend coding-related denials, identify root causes, and advise leadership on resolution opportunities
  • Build collaborative relationships to support accurate system configuration
  • Track and trend role functions for reporting
  • Review audits and education needs with the Manager of Laboratory Revenue Integrity & RCM
  • Establish coding guidelines with Laboratory Leadership and ensure coding team audits are completed timely
  • Report compliance and other concerns to Laboratory Leadership as needed

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) certification from AHIMA
  • Certified Professional Coder (CPC) certification from AAPC
  • Coding experience
  • Ability to perform the essential job functions of a Laboratory Billing & Coding Representative
  • Knowledge of CPT, HCPCS, modifier, and place of service coding
  • Knowledge of laboratory coding and billing practices
  • Knowledge of current coding regulations and compliance requirements
  • Ability to audit laboratory billing workflows and charge integrity
  • Ability to analyze billing data, performance, benchmarks, and coding-related denials
  • Ability to work with EPIC and laboratory information systems (LIS)
