About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Function as an integral part of the perioperative team as the first, second, or assisting Surgical Technician under Registered Nurse supervision
- Deliver safe and effective patient care during the intraoperative period
- Apply asepsis principles to maintain a sterile environment during surgical setup and procedures
- Perform technical and psychomotor skills with appropriate judgment and knowledge
- Provide age-specific care to obstetrical patients according to department policies and procedures
- Organize and coordinate supplies and equipment to maintain an efficient, cost-effective department
- Maintain a safe environment for patients, coworkers, and self
- Follow hospital and unit safety, legal, and procedural requirements
- Charge equipment and supplies
- Participate in operating room turnover and setup
- Maintain and clean equipment and identify items needing repair
- Perform sterilization and disinfection and document loads according to policy
- Obtain supplies, equipment, and positioning devices and assist with patient positioning
- Perform sterilization of surgical instrumentation and document per policy
- Perform scrubbing duties for medical students, residents, and other students
Requirements
What you’ll need- Associate's Degree in Surgical Technology, Certificate of Completion in Surgical Technology, or experience in lieu of education
- Basic Life Support (BLS) within 30 days from the American Heart Association (AHA)
- Certified Surgical Assistant (CSA) from the National Commission for the Certification of Surgical Assistants (NCCSA), or Licensed Surgical Assistant within 1 year through the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR), or Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) within 1 year from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA)
- 2+ years of operating room scrub experience
- Ability to apply asepsis principles and maintain sterility
- Competency in selected technical and psychomotor skills
- Knowledge of sterilization, disinfection, surgical instrumentation, and operating room procedures
- Ability to provide age-specific care to obstetrical patients
- Ability to follow safety, legal, and departmental policies and procedures
