Key responsibilities & impact

Continuously observe, evaluate, and recall cardiac rhythms of telemetry patients
Ensure proper function of monitoring equipment and maintain adequate supplies
Interpret cardiac rhythms and measure EKG intervals
Recognize dysrhythmias and changes in EKG complexes promptly
Monitor Q waves, ST segments, and QT intervals
Respond to monitoring outcomes and investigate interruptions in heart-rhythm reception
Accurately document EKG rhythm strips and rhythm changes
Provide concise end-of-shift and EKG rhythm reports to RNs
Report rhythm changes and equipment failures to the appropriate nurse or team
Use monitoring-system functions and enter monitoring changes in the computer
Troubleshoot monitoring equipment and seek assistance from peers, the Unit Leader, or Biomedical Engineering
Control, track, and restock monitoring equipment and supplies
Act as a unit receptionist and greet visitors, physicians, patients, and staff
Answer telephone calls professionally and channel incoming and outgoing information
Adapt to changing environments, including Code Blue, UAT, and staffing needs
Support patient, environmental, and personal safety measures
Maintain clear hallways and doorways and use protective equipment appropriately
Follow hand hygiene and body-mechanics practices
Respond to alarms and call lights
Promote patient and staff safety through appropriate use of lift equipment

Requirements

What you’ll need

High School Diploma/GED
Successfully complete certification EKG test and ongoing recertifications
Attend and participate in unit meetings and required in-services
Knowledge of cardiac rhythms, EKG intervals, Q waves, ST segments, and QT intervals
Ability to use and individualize cardiac monitoring-system settings
Ability to enter monitoring changes in the computer
Problem-solving skills for monitoring-equipment troubleshooting
Ability to maintain and track equipment and supplies
Ability to provide patient safety support, including lifting, transfers, side rails, bed checks, call lights, gait belts, slide boards, and restraints
Ability to use lift equipment appropriately
Ability to adapt to rapidly changing environment and work volume
Ability to communicate concise, complete rhythm reports to RNs and interact with physicians
