About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Perform routine and complex blood drawing procedures, including venipuncture, finger and heel sticks, and blood cultures
- Verify patient identification and specimen labeling using two identifiers
- Maintain response times for STAT and TIMED orders
- Participate in trauma and code response teams
- Collect blood specimens from newborn through geriatric patients in emergency, inpatient, and outpatient areas
- Perform specialized blood collection procedures for commercial laboratories and research
- Apply Chloroprep skin decontamination for blood cultures and coordinate nurse-assisted port collections
- Collect initial blood specimens for trauma patients
- Participate in accreditation, proficiency testing, and annual performance competencies
- Complete re-education or retraining as needed
- Follow laboratory and organizational policies and procedures and document required reviews
- Communicate accurately, promptly, effectively, and professionally with internal and external customers
- Work in a fast-paced hospital environment
Requirements
What you’ll need- High school diploma/GED required
- Perform venipuncture and skin puncture
- Demonstrate excellent communication and patient care skills
- Demonstrate ability to work in a fast-paced environment
- Successfully complete accreditation, proficiency testing, and annual performance competencies
- Complete continuing education as required by laboratory policy and to maintain certification if applicable
- Follow laboratory and organizational policies and procedures
- Work night shift, Monday–Friday, 11 a.m.–11 p.m.
- Work one weekend every three weeks
- Work one holiday per year
