Key responsibilities & impact
  • Perform routine and complex blood drawing procedures, including venipuncture, finger and heel sticks, and blood cultures
  • Verify patient identification and specimen labeling using two identifiers
  • Maintain response times for STAT and TIMED orders
  • Participate in trauma and code response teams
  • Collect blood specimens from newborn to geriatric patients in emergency, inpatient, and outpatient settings
  • Use vacutainer, hypodermic syringe, and butterfly needle systems for venipuncture
  • Perform specialized blood collections for commercial laboratories and research
  • Decontaminate blood culture draw sites with Chloroprep and collect blood culture specimens
  • Coordinate with nurses for port collections when required
  • Participate in accreditation, proficiency testing, annual competencies, re-education, and retraining
  • Follow laboratory and organizational policies and procedures and complete required documentation
  • Communicate accurately, timely, effectively, and professionally with internal and external customers
  • Work in a fast-paced hospital environment

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • High school diploma/GED (required)
  • Ability to perform venipuncture and skin puncture
  • Ability to perform routine and complex blood drawing procedures
  • Ability to accurately identify patients and label specimens
  • Ability to meet STAT collection within 15 minutes and TIMED collection within the specified 30-minute window
  • Ability to work with patients from newborn to geriatric populations
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Participation in required accreditation, proficiency testing, and annual competency testing
  • Completion of continuing education as required by laboratory policy
  • No certifications are specified as required
