About the role
- The Medical Auditor conducts chart audits by reviewing documentation in the patient’s record, including orders, medications, supplies, and procedures performed, and ensures all applicable charges are accurate and appropriately supported.
- Makes adjustments to the patient’s account, adding or removing charges as supported by documentation.
- Provides education to individuals and groups to improve charging accuracy and documentation practices.
- Performs chart audits in a timely, accurate, and thorough manner.
- Reviews patient documentation, identifies charging discrepancies, and makes appropriate account adjustments.
- Records charging weaknesses and communicates deficiencies and trends to departmental leadership.
- Contacts staff to obtain missing or additional documentation required to support billed charges.
- Submits analysis of audit results and provides recommendations to management.
- Conducts inservices and education sessions to improve staff understanding of charge accuracy and required documentation.
- Attends professional development seminars and inservices to remain current in clinical procedures and medical documentation standards.
- Keeps updated on allowable procedures and billing requirements in accordance with Carilion Clinic policies.
- Reports potential billing or documentation compliance concerns to appropriate leadership.
Requirements
- Associate’s degree is required; 2 years of relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree
- A minimum of 2 years of experience in a hospital, clinic/physician ambulatory site, or in billing, auditing, or compliance is required
- Clinical or coding certification is preferred
- Must possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills to interact effectively with staff and department leaders
- Must demonstrate strong organizational and time management skills and be self-motivated with the ability to work independently
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word and Excel, is required
- Must be able to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information appropriately.
