About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Develop, implement, and maintain enterprise ontologies supporting Capital One’s Data Strategy
  • Develop domain ontologies across Capital One Lines of Business and Functions
  • Partner with Technology, Machine Learning, and other teams to develop and integrate semantic technology into products and services
  • Define actionable problem statements, acceptance criteria, success metrics, and measurable outcomes
  • Own and prioritize the near-term Ontology and Data Modeling roadmap
  • Create reusable, extensible, and resilient capabilities
  • Develop and communicate a 6-month vision to senior stakeholders and partner teams
  • Lead recruiting, mentoring, and development of junior ontology and data modeling associates
  • Manage teams developing, implementing, and governing ontologies and optimized data models
  • Contribute to data integration and mapping efforts
  • Communicate and advocate the value of ontologies, semantics, and standardization across the business
  • Monitor competitor and industry developments
  • Adhere to W3C ontology standards including RDF, RDFS, OWL, SKOS, and SHACL
  • Develop standards, guidelines, and direction for ontology, data modeling, semantics, and data standardization

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor’s degree in information science, computer science, engineering, library science, ontology, semantics or computational linguistics
  • At least 4 years’ experience in a metadata field of work (ontology, taxonomy, semantics or computational linguistics)
  • At least 4 years’ experience or training in using W3C standards including linked and canonical data and ontologies (JSON, XML, RDF, RDFS, OWL, and SKOS)
  • At least 4 years’ experience or training in ontology and linked data tools (Protégé, TopQuadrant, PoolParty, Stardog, AnzoGraph, Neptune, or Data.World)
  • At least 4 years’ experience or training with SQL or SPARQL
  • Preferred: Master’s degree or PhD in information science, computer science, engineering, library science, ontology, semantics or computational linguistics
  • Understanding of ontologies, controlled vocabularies and thesauri
  • Familiarity with graph databases and technologies
  • Familiarity with Python or R
  • Familiarity with JSON, OpenAPI/YAML, AVRO
  • Familiarity with Agile principles, processes, and methodologies
  • Familiarity with Amazon Web Services
  • Strong project management experience
  • Ability to work individually and with a team to meet deadlines
