About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Providing expert counsel and strategic guidance across a critical spectrum of areas impacting commercial relationships
Negotiating, drafting, and guiding implementation of commercial agreements
Supporting credit, fintech and payment innovation related new product initiatives and innovation across the Discover Network
Supporting the development and maintenance of competitive rule sets for the Discover Network
Identifying and supporting process improvements to promote agility in legal and related business operations
Partnering collaboratively with other internal counsel and business teams across the enterprise
Partnering with Risk and Compliance teams to ensure comprehensive support

Requirements

What you’ll need

Juris Doctor from an accredited law school
Active member in good standing of at least one state bar
At least 8 years of experience in a law firm, in-house legal department, or a combination
Demonstrated leadership qualities and ability to get issues resolved across organizational borders
Ability to understand complex topics quickly with depth that allows for concise and simple advice
Problem solving mentality rather than thinking only like a legal technician
Excellent judgment with the ability to predict long-term consequences
Growth mindset with an openness to new ideas, diverse perspectives, and unconventional solutions
Strong people skills - we’re looking for someone who can build collegial and effective relationships with colleagues and clients
Ownership mentality, thinking like an owner vs. an employee
Solid time management skills with the ability to prioritize a significant volume of work and to manage multiple deadlines
Excellent communication skills with the ability to influence others and write concisely.
