Key responsibilities & impact

Provide senior technical leadership across backend systems behind Canva's experimentation programme
Evolve the platform used to set up experiments, target users, expose variants and measure outcomes
Help build safer and more intuitive experimentation capabilities
Reinforce good experimentation practices, surface signals faster and alert early when things go wrong
Explore automation of experimentation analysis using AI
Take ownership of significant technical problems
Work with senior leaders across Canva and shape the platform's future direction
Collaborate with teams building the platform
Support engineers configuring and launching experiments
Collaborate with data scientists who analyze experimentation data
Collaborate with product teams using insights to decide what should roll out, change or stop
Collaborate broadly across Canva engineering and data science organizations

Requirements

What you’ll need

Experience building backend systems or platforms that other engineers depend on
Experience with experimentation, A/B testing, feature-management or progressive-rollout systems in a large engineering environment
Experience taking ambiguous engineering problems, forming technical direction and helping engineers move toward an outcome
Experience building internal platforms or capabilities and driving adoption
Strong software engineering fundamentals
Experience designing reliable backend and distributed systems
Understanding of scalability, availability, consistency and failure modes
Familiarity with data engineering, analytics engineering or large-scale data processing
Familiarity with experiment assignment, targeting, variants, feature flags, metrics, guardrails and progressive rollout
Strong engineering fundamentals and ability to transfer them between languages
Java is useful but not a hard requirement
Nice to have: direct experimentation, A/B testing, feature-management or rollout infrastructure experience
Nice to have: background spanning software engineering and data science, data engineering or analytics engineering
Nice to have: feature flagging, user targeting, progressive rollout or automated guardrail systems experience
Nice to have: statistical intuition and comfort working with experimentation and statistics
