Key responsibilities & impact

Provide senior technical leadership across backend systems supporting Canva's experimentation programme
Evolve the platform used to set up experiments, target users, expose variants and measure outcomes
Improve experimentation practices, surface signals faster and alert early when guardrails are threatened
Explore automation of experimentation analysis using AI
Own significant technical problems
Work with senior leaders across Canva to shape the platform's direction
Collaborate with teams building the platform
Build shared experimentation capabilities used across Canva
Collaborate broadly with engineering and data science organisations and senior technical leaders
Support engineers configuring and launching experiments, data scientists analyzing impact, and product teams deciding what to roll out, change or stop

Requirements

What you’ll need

Experience building backend systems or platforms that other engineers depend on
Experience with experimentation, A/B testing, feature-management or progressive-rollout systems in a large engineering environment
Experience taking ambiguous engineering problems, forming technical direction and helping engineers move toward an outcome
Experience building internal platforms or capabilities and driving adoption
Strong software engineering fundamentals
Experience designing reliable backend and distributed systems
Ability to reason about scalability, availability, consistency and failure modes
Familiarity with data engineering, analytics engineering or large-scale data processing
Familiarity with experiment assignment, targeting, variants, feature flags, metrics, guardrails and progressive rollout
Strong engineering fundamentals transferable between languages
Direct experimentation, A/B testing, feature-management or rollout infrastructure experience is a nice to have
Background spanning software engineering and data science, data engineering or analytics engineering is a nice to have
Feature flagging, user targeting, progressive rollout or automated guardrail experience is a nice to have
Statistical intuition and ability to work closely with data scientists is valuable
Willingness to participate in interactive, real-time technical challenges and potentially use AI tools during interviews
