About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Lead the technical design, architecture, and development of secure, scalable financial services (loan management systems, ledgers, payment flows and data platforms).
- Collaborate with the product and tech teams to implement robust transactional workflows and integrate with external financial, credit, or payment providers.
- Write exceptionally well-tested, fault-tolerant code and proactively identify areas for technical improvement, security enhancements or infrastructure refactoring.
- Set direction bringing ideas backed by rigorous technical and architectural reasoning.
- Guide system design and code reviews, ensuring data integrity, consistency and compliance with financial standards.
- Mentor and elevate other engineers, championing backend best practices and a culture of uncompromising quality and security.
Requirements
What you’ll need- 5+ years experience as a software engineer, with a strong focus on backend systems or full stack development.
- 2+ years building highly reliable transactional systems such as ledgers, payment flows, or fintech/lending platforms.
- Preferably 2+ years in a technical leadership role, leading engineers within cross-functional squads and owning delivery outcomes.
- Demonstrated experience working in regulated environments with an understanding of compliance, auditability, and data governance (e.g. ASIC, APRA, PCI-DSS, SOC 2, or similar).
- Strong understanding of financial domain concepts such as double-entry ledgers, reconciliation, settlements, interest calculations, and idempotent transaction handling.
- Proven experience owning system architecture for complex, real-world applications, including evolving systems safely over time.
- Strong backend fundamentals including relational databases, data integrity, API design, and concurrency control.
- Experience designing systems with high levels of correctness, consistency, and fault tolerance, especially where financial accuracy is critical.
- Comfortable taking ownership of features end to end, from architecture through to production, and driving the “how” in ambiguous environments.
- Experience with payment gateways, banking integrations, event-driven systems, or high-security architectures.
- Strong focus on observability, monitoring, and incident response, with the ability to design systems that are debuggable and auditable.
- Experience handling data migrations, backfills, and production changes safely in systems where data correctness is critical.
- Thinks from first principles and can break complex system problems down to fundamentals rather than relying on default patterns.
- Enjoys mentoring others, providing constructive feedback, and lifting the technical bar across the team.
- High attention to detail, especially when dealing with financial data, edge cases, and production scenarios.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to clearly explain technical trade-offs to non-technical stakeholders.
- Ambitious and motivated to build robust fintech infrastructure within a growing business.
- Positive, pragmatic attitude with strong interpersonal skills.
