About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • The Genetic Counseling Assistant supports the BUMC genetics team with referral triage, operational workflow, documentation preservation, patient care coordination, variant database management, administrative meeting support, and assistance in genetic testing coordination
  • The GCA is responsible for supporting the clinical genetics team (physicians and genetic counselors) across Boston University Medical Campus for all patients and families receiving genetic services and molecular testing
  • The GCA will work closely with the genetics medical director, who partners with the lead genetic counselor, to provide administrative support of diverse aspects of the genetics service
  • Such responsibilities may include administrative functions, including triaging incoming cases to appropriate divisions, optimization of operational workflows
  • The GCA will oversee a database of variants of uncertain significance for genetic testing across the institution, triaging reports to appropriate divisions and verifying critical notifications
  • The GCA will attend Medical Genetics Oversight and Genetic Testing Workgroup meetings to provide administrative support
  • Other activities may include assisting with the creation of educational and promotional materials for medical staff and patients, participating in performance/quality improvement projects, tracking the status of genetic testing, and other duties as assigned.

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor’s degree in a biological/health science or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Experience in a clinical environment is preferred
  • Comfortable working with a diverse population and interacting with medical personnel
  • Must be able to communicate effectively (both oral and written) with clinicians and patients
  • Must be able to work collaboratively as part of a team in a fast-paced environment
  • Must be able to work both independently and as a member of a team
  • Excellent organizational skills, ability to multi-task and attention to detail
  • Requires the ability to take initiative, problem-solve, be resourceful and troubleshoot
  • Ability to be flexible in response to changing demands
  • Proficient in MS Word and PowerPoint; Skilled in MS Excel
  • Proficiency in Spanish, Haitian Creole, or Portuguese is appreciated.
