About the role
- Naval Architect tasked to support the Victoria Class submarine maintenance programs and other submarine design, build, modernization, refit and replacement programs as required.
- Providing Naval Architecture advice and support to external and internal customers.
- Independently undertake technical work which requires coordination with colleagues and making a substantial contribution to assigned projects.
- Working collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team.
- Complying with relevant business and ethics codes of conduct.
- Undertaking engineering activities in a way that contributes to best practice.
- Working within the BMT Quality Management System (QMS) processes and procedures.
- Maintaining your technical competency in your area(s) of specialization.
- Demonstrating willingness and active adoption of coaching and mentoring provided by senior staff, and support with mentorship to junior staff in developing technical competency.
- Contributing to building a positive team culture through input, feedback and participation in team building and wellness activities.
- Conduct ship surveys for design and engineering changes, mid-life upgrades and vessel condition documentation including: Lead development of survey packages from technical documentation.
- Conduct visual inspections and condition surveys on marine structures (including submarines) in a heavy industrial environment.
- Produce survey reports which compile inspection finding including stability reports in client, Class or Standard designated formats.
- Knowledge of the principles and application of key Naval Architectural policies standards and references, including: Canadian Forces Technical Orders (CFTOs).
- International Maritime Organization standards.
- Stamp and Seal Professional Engineering deliverables in area of practise.
- Maintain a program of Continuing Professional Development to sustain your technical knowledge.
Requirements
- Degree in Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, Civil Engineering or Mechanical Engineering from an accredited post-secondary institution.
- Minimum 8 years of experience in structural repair or marine engineering.
- Existing registration or ability to obtain registration with a Professional Engineering governance body in Province of work.
- Eligible for a Canadian security clearance.
- Strong understanding of ship stability, structural design, and docking.
- Experience in the in-service support of ship construction and/or repair.
- Experience working in a fast-paced commercial shipyard environment.
- Ability to work independently and to learn without formal instruction.
