About the role

  • Overall strategic and operational responsibility for the National Capital Region chapter’s staff, volunteers, programs, and budget
  • Manage local board, VIP engagement, fundraising, storytelling, stewardship, CRM, budgeting, volunteer management, partner development, membership engagement, marketing, and communications
  • Collaborate across Blue Star Families enterprise (operations, development, marketing, strategy, technology, finance)
  • Develop chapter sustainability plan and expand local revenue-generating and fundraising activities
  • Secure six-figure gifts from philanthropies, foundations, corporate partners, and high-net-worth donors
  • Partner with Development Team and Host Committee to source, cultivate, and steward funders; responsible for meeting annual fundraising goals
  • Develop and implement national programs locally (Welcome Week, Campaign for Inclusion, Military Family Lifestyle Survey) and evaluate program components
  • Build and steward a strong, diverse, engaged advisory board and energize board members, committees, and partners
  • Lead, coach, develop, and retain volunteers and manage program manager
  • Develop local partnerships to connect military families with community resources and educate leaders using Blue Star Families research
  • Must reside in the designated chapter community and have lived there for a minimum of the past three years

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field or 7+ years experience in community relations and development
  • 5-10+ years of management experience
  • Track record of effective fund-raising strategies that have taken an organization to the next stage of growth
  • Unwavering commitment to Blue Star Families’ mission, quality programs, and data-driven program evaluation
  • Excellence in organizational management; ability to coach staff/volunteers, manage and develop high-performance teams, set and achieve strategic objectives, and manage to budget
  • Past success working with an Advisory Board and ability to cultivate board relationships
  • Strong marketing, public relations, and fundraising experience; ability to engage diverse stakeholders and cultures
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; persuasive and passionate communicator with excellent interpersonal and multidisciplinary project skills
  • Entrepreneurial spirit eager to engage potential partners to build community-based solutions
  • Action-oriented, adaptable, and innovative approach to business planning
  • Ability to work effectively in collaboration with diverse groups of people
  • Passion, idealism, integrity, positive attitude, mission-driven, and self-directed
  • Limited out-of-town/overnight travel required (less than 25% overnight travel)
  • May be required to work nights, weekends, and holidays as necessary
  • Experience with Customer Relationship Management (CRM) systems; familiarity with Salesforce a plus
  • Knowledge of Blue Star Families and the military family experience
