About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Serve as a subject matter expert and authority on the Android codebase, setting technical direction and platform standards
Lead design and implementation of complex initiatives spanning multiple sprints or quarters and potentially multiple teams
Own resolution of complex Android technical problems and evaluate trade-offs for ambiguous problems
Establish engineering standards and best practices through code reviews, architectural guidance, and mentorship
Drive architectural decisions and partner with the Architecture team on work spanning multiple systems
Unblock the team on difficult problems, mentor engineers, and grow collective technical capability
Shape the Android technical vision and roadmap with the Engineering Manager, product, and design teams
Identify risks, dependencies, and technical debt and break large initiatives into executable phases
Lead technical interviews and contribute to hiring calibration
Participate in code reviews, learning, and knowledge sharing
Stay current on Android development trends, tools, and technologies and champion quality improvements
Occasionally contribute bug fixes or shepherd community-submitted pull requests

Requirements

What you’ll need

Deep expertise developing complex Android applications with Kotlin and Jetpack Compose
Track record of leading initiatives beyond individual features
Strong command of Android UI/UX design and architecture principles
Experience setting technical standards and driving adoption across a team or organization
Familiarity with unit testing, UI testing, and snapshot testing
Experience using Claude Code or a similar generative AI coding platform
Experience with Android-specific components such as Autofill Service and Accessibility Service
Experience with Google Play internal/beta testing tracks
Proven ability to mentor and coach engineers and develop technical talent
Ability to frame complex, poorly defined problems for productive cross-team discussion
Ability to drive alignment across teams and stakeholders, resolve conflicts, and build consensus
Excellent written and verbal communication and documentation skills
Collaborative and adaptable mindset
