About the role

  • On-site Patient Financial Counselor at Exeter Hospital, acting as liaison for patients to the health system
  • Screen patients for MassHealth and other state programs such as Connector Care
  • Provide guidance and support for billing concerns, insurance options and benefits, gaps in coverage, and payment options
  • Assist with patient statements, payment plans, pricing estimates, Financial Assistance, Federal/State benefits, and managed care process
  • Support Patient Access and both Hospital and Professional Billing areas; work in conjunction with Customer Service
  • Help patients understand Explanation of Benefits (EOB) including insurance policies and covered services
  • Coordinate with departments, providers, and outside stakeholders to resolve patient financial concerns and secure coverage
  • Follow protocols to communicate financial counseling actions prior to scheduling procedures that may not be covered by insurance
  • Provide timely estimates for services in compliance with CMS price transparency regulations
  • Collect payments for self-pay patients, including pre-payments, copayments, deductibles, and outstanding balances
  • Educate and enroll qualified patients in payment plans per leadership guidelines
  • Screen and approve patients for Financial Assistance (Charity) following policy guidelines
  • Visit inpatients and outpatients when appropriate to discuss coverage applications and payment options
  • Support MassHealth/Medicaid Open Enrollment and process necessary applications
  • Address Managed Care concerns and work directly with Customer Service for account adjustments, statement generation, or billing errors
  • Travel between specified hospitals as needed and work on assigned projects
  • Adhere to corporate and governmental compliance, Cash and Collection Policies, and Customer Service standards

Requirements

  • High School Diploma required
  • Maintains annual Certified Application Counselor (CAC) certification for the state of Massachusetts
  • CAC Certification preferred; CPC Certification a plus
  • 2-3 years' experience in Financial Counseling, Social Work, Case Work, Patient Access or Billing preferred
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills
  • Must exhibit tact, diplomacy and discretion at all times
  • Must be able to multi-task and work in a fast-paced, detail oriented environment
  • Working knowledge of MS Office suite and database systems; ability to learn new systems
  • EPIC system experience preferred
  • Ability to travel between Burlington, Winchester, Peabody, and Beverly Hospitals
  • Influenza (flu) vaccination required as a condition of employment
