About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Analyze sensor coverage, occlusion, and blind spots for candidate sensor suites on new machine types
- Build or extend tooling modeling field of view, range, and coverage geometry
- Run trade studies balancing performance, cost, durability, and mounting constraints
- Prototype mounting concepts and validate coverage assumptions on actual machines
- Convert analysis into sensor requirements and specifications for hardware implementation
- Collaborate across perception, hardware, and safety teams
- Work across sensor physics, autonomy systems architecture, mechanical integration, and design
Requirements
What you’ll need- Currently pursuing a BS, MS, or PhD in an engineering or engineering-adjacent discipline such as mechanical, electrical, physics, mechatronics, robotics, or computer science, or equivalent hands-on experience
- Solid grasp of 3D geometry, coordinate frames, and transforms
- Python for analysis and tooling
- CAD fluency sufficient to reason about hardware placement
- Willingness to visit mock construction sites and test sensor configurations
- Preferred: experience with device physics, ray tracing, rendering, or coverage simulation
- Preferred: familiarity with autonomous vehicle sensor suites
- Preferred: exposure to heavy equipment or off-road machinery
- Legally authorized to work in the United States
- Able to commute to the San Francisco location 3–4 days per week
