About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Supervise the lighting teams to achieve the desired visual style for the animation project.
  • Ensure and maintain lighting quality and consistency across all shots of the film.
  • Collaborate with the CG Supervisor to assess the technical feasibility of designs, proposing production-appropriate solutions while respecting the director's vision and the project's technical constraints.
  • Consult with the Director and CG Supervisor to assign tasks to artists based on their skills, strengths, and experience, optimizing workflow and creativity.
  • Regularly review artists' work, provide feedback, and approve shots for submission to the Director.
  • Lead and guide the lighting teams to achieve the desired look, balancing artistic requirements with productivity and budgetary constraints, in collaboration with production management.
  • Solve complex technical and creative lighting challenges, ensuring high-quality results that support storytelling and emotional impact.
  • Manage shot continuity and maintain visual consistency between sequences, ensuring the film's visual identity is preserved.
  • Work with production management to ensure the team meets schedule and budget, making adjustments as needed to meet deadlines.
  • Develop and oversee the lighting and compositing workflow, resource requirements, methodologies, tools, schedules, and work assignments.
  • Maintain up-to-date documentation for the team and other supervisors.
  • Keep the team informed of project updates and developments.
  • Initiate procedures and tools to optimize production.
  • Serve as the primary liaison for interdepartmental communication.
  • Provide constructive feedback to each artist on their performance.
  • Actively participate in the recruitment and selection process for new artists.

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Minimum 10 years of production experience and deep knowledge of various software platforms.
  • At least 5 years of leadership experience on a fully animated or hybrid project.
  • Production experience using Katana and RenderMan, and compositing experience in Nuke.
  • Strong understanding of traditional lighting and composition techniques and principles.
  • Strong technical background and the ability to quickly learn new software and systems.
  • High degree of self-direction and strong work ethic.
  • Knowledge of UNIX and shell scripting.
  • Ability to plan and execute complex 3D lighting scenes, including work with layers and passes, performing complex compositing, and optimizing scenes and renders.
  • Strong communication skills (written, verbal, and interpersonal).
  • Strong artistic understanding of lighting and composition.
