About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Provide English/Spanish interpretation services for patients and companions with limited English proficiency throughout the hospital
  • Facilitate patient/provider communication during every aspect of the patient stay, from registration to discharge
  • Act as a neutral conduit of information between healthcare providers and patients and families
  • Interpret patient and family questions or concerns to appropriate healthcare staff
  • Interpret medical terminology, support services, policies, and procedures for limited-English-proficient patients
  • Document all interpretation services accurately, completely, and clearly
  • Serve as a cultural mediator when appropriate to enhance communication related to medical care
  • Confer with a supervisor on unusual situations
  • Perform functions according to established policies, procedures, regulatory and accreditation requirements, and professional standards
  • Provide an excellent customer service experience while demonstrating Banner Health core and leader behaviors
  • Work three days per week on one of two available shifts: 5AM–5PM or 5PM–5AM
  • Work one weekend shift per month and one major holiday as needed

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Completion of a Medical Interpreter training program highly preferred
  • One year work experience as a Medical Interpreter required
  • Written and oral language assessment required
  • Associate's degree in communications or health care related field or equivalent experience
  • Fluency in English and the target language of interpretation
  • Understanding of medical terminology
  • Written and oral exam score of 75% or above required for new hires or transfers into the role
  • Effective communication, problem-solving, human relations, organizational, and time management skills
  • Flexibility in responding to multiple demands
  • Completion of post-offer Occupational Health physical assessment, drug screen, and background check required
  • Bachelor’s degree in communications or health care related field preferred
  • Completion of a medical interpreter skills training course preferred
