About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Greet patients and families and provide front-office customer service
  • Perform pre-registration and registration processes
  • Assist with check-in, forms, intakes, scheduling, and insurance cards
  • Answer phones and take messages
  • Calculate patient liability and collect deposits, co-payments, and patient payments
  • Coordinate, clarify, and communicate financial aspects of the care continuum
  • Determine initial authorizations with the clinical care team
  • Obtain and verify insurance benefit information and authorizations
  • Document insurance, authorization, provider, and treatment-plan information in the patient records system
  • Provide financial counseling and explain benefits, billing issues, company financial policies, and payment options
  • Assist uninsured patients and families with alternative funding and community resources
  • Liaise between patients, the Patient Financial Services department, payers, clinical teams, and physician office staff
  • Resolve outstanding issues and patient concerns and support account receivables performance
  • Provide leadership, training, and resources to financial team members as needed
  • Work independently under general supervision in a fast-paced, high-volume environment

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Associate’s Degree, with a focus in social work, healthcare administration or finance
  • Minimum of three years of diversified experience in a hospital Patient Registration/Financial Services setting
  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Understanding of common insurance and payor types, authorization requirements, and alternative financial resources
  • Highly developed interpersonal, communications, and human relations skills
  • Accurate and efficient keyboarding skills
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Flexibility in responding to multiple demands
  • Ability to retain large amounts of changing payor information and knowledge
  • Ability to work independently under general supervision and make sound decisions in a fast-paced, high-volume environment
  • Arizona Department of Public Safety Level One Fingerprint Clearance Card required at hire and throughout employment for employees working at Banner MD Anderson on the Banner University Medical Center Phoenix campus
  • Bachelor’s degree in social work, healthcare administration or finance preferred
  • Prior experience as a social worker or financial counselor preferred
  • Additional related education and/or experience preferred
  • Completion of post-offer Occupational Health physical assessment, drug screen, and background check required
