About the role
- Provides interpretation for Limited English Proficient (LEP) patients and their families.
- Acts as a conduit of information for all clinical services including medical terminology and support services, policies and procedures to LEP patients.
- Interprets patient and/or family questions or concerns to appropriate healthcare staff to optimize the patient care experience.
- Documents accurately, completely and clearly all interpretation services.
- Serves as a cultural mediator, as necessary and when appropriate, to enhance communication between patients/family, as it relates to medical care.
- Acts as a neutral party in the role as a conduit of information between health care staff and patients and families.
- Confers with supervisor on any unusual situations.
Requirements
- Completion of a Medical Interpreter training program highly preferred
- One year work experience as a Medical Interpreter required
- Written and oral language assessment will be required
- Must demonstrate effective communication skills
- Problem solving, strong human relations skills, organizational and time management skills and flexibility in responding to multiple demands.
- Must possess a level of knowledge typically acquired through the completion of an associate's degree in communications or health care related field or equivalent experience.
- Requires fluency in English and target language of interpretation and a proficiency level typically achieved with 1 year of experience as an interpreter.
- Requires an understanding of medical terminology.
