About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Lead Austin Powder Company’s technical products and services offering for Western USA precious metals, base metals, and industrial mineral mining markets.
  • Identify, vet, develop, and implement products, technologies, services, and techniques to grow and support the Western US Mining customer base.
  • Provide technical expertise in blast design, product selection, surveying, loading, and analysis for surface and underground mining.
  • Collaborate with local, regional, and corporate teams on identification, development, sale, and application of technical products and services.
  • Ensure technical capabilities are appropriately located to support current and future customer demands.
  • Maintain a safe and healthy work environment and ensure regulatory and policy compliance.
  • Provide technical support including blast design, product selection, surveying, post-blast analysis, blast optimization, and mine planning.
  • Identify technical service requirements for existing customers and underground market growth.
  • Develop surface and underground technical service representatives with corporate and LLC management teams.
  • Collaborate with local and regional teams to ensure operational and technical capability to meet customer needs.
  • Develop and implement policies, best practices, SOPs, and training materials.
  • Maintain proficiency with applicable technical-services technologies.
  • Attend customer sites on short notice across western US and Canadian markets as needed.
  • Lead or support investigations of product complaints, misfires, and blasting incidents, determining root causes and corrective actions.
  • Manage technical blasting equipment identification, vetting, ordering, maintenance, and training.
  • Build relationships and internal expertise networks across Austin Powder.
  • Support product manufacturing objectives and product improvements with Product Managers.
  • Identify, test, qualify, develop, and implement new or improved products.
  • Build understanding of local, state, and federal rules and regulations.
  • Participate in explosives industry news and events.
  • Assist with business cases for CapEx requests, business development, R&D, and process improvement initiatives.
  • Assist with RFP and RFI responses.
  • Train internal and external stakeholders on blasting topics.
  • Report to the Director of Corporate Technical Services as part of the Corporate Technical Services team.

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Strong understanding of surface and underground mining methods and techniques.
  • Extensive technical expertise in blast design, product selection, surveying, loading, and analysis.
  • Significant knowledge of company products and equipment used in blasting applications.
  • Ability to communicate technical and operational needs effectively with customer management and engineering teams.
  • Strong presentation and writing skills.
  • Ability to lead and manage teams of technical specialists.
  • Systematic observation, analysis, interpretation, evaluation, explanation, problem solving, and decision-making abilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, schedules, events, and meetings.
  • Strong time management and prioritization skills; self-starter.
  • Ability to train internal and external stakeholders on fundamental and advanced blasting topics.
  • Ability to identify trends and develop innovation strategies.
  • Ability to attain state blasting licensure and ATF explosive handling clearance.
  • Completed bachelor’s or master’s degree, preferably in Mining Engineering; relevant experience in lieu of education may be considered.
  • 10+ years of experience as a mining engineer, explosives engineer, drill & blast engineer, blaster-in-charge, or related industry experience.
  • Must be located within a predominant mining market with reasonable access to a domestic airport.
  • Ability to work in office, plant, and outdoor environments with up to 75% overnight travel.
