About the role
- Lead the development of controls architecture for large, multi-module automation systems
- Program control and vision systems for cam, servo, and air-operated stations, as well as test and electrical devices
- Ensure electrical design and software architecture are functional, robust, and cost-effective
- Incorporate ATS Life Sciences Chicago standards and regulatory requirements into every design
- Research, specify, and select appropriate components and materials
- Develop and maintain electrical wiring schematics, flow diagrams, panel layouts, bills of materials, and release documentation
- Participate in internal and customer design reviews, installations, and service calls as needed
- Guide and support electricians in wiring and code compliance
- Collaborate with suppliers to identify functional and economical design solutions
- Contribute to project execution plans, ensuring adherence to schedule and budget
- Troubleshoot and debug software issues alongside Mechanical Builders and Electricians
- Document changes and updates thoroughly
- Mentor and provide technical guidance to Controls Engineers I and II
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field (or equivalent experience)
- 6+ years of experience in automation and controls engineering
- Proficiency with Allen-Bradley PLCs, HMIs, servo control, and electrical design
- Experience with machine vision systems (Cognex or Keyence) preferred
- Proficient in EPLAN, AutoCAD, SolidWorks, and Microsoft Office Suite
- Hands-on experience with tools such as calipers, micrometers, multimeters, and other measurement instruments
